“The medium is the message” was famously said by Marshall McLuhan in 1964. It conveys the idea that the medium or technology would dictate the ideas that we generate and drown out free-flowing messages generated by the self. Today, so much of this is true as design is generated, even inspired by the computer. Resulting in a monotony of digitally incestuous results and the threat of losing the art & soul of design. Therefore, we must refocus on other means of inspiration. The ultimate teacher: nature.
As a collective (art & sons + participants), we will explore the grounds of Taliesin utilizing nature as inspiration and design mentor. Through the exploration of Wright’s design principles and natural elements on the Taliesin grounds, we will construct Wright’s own words in natural mediums. Our time together will be spent discussing design and nature, and our place within it — all while exploring Taliesin. We will document the process, and participants will create/receive limited edition prints of the experience.
Ages 18+ • September 15-17, 2023 • Friday 2pm – Sunday 4pm
Art & Sons is a collaborative of creators who set out to help organizations broadcast their mission through a strong and human visual voice. Our biggest influences are our natural Wisconsin surroundings. Our main focus is graphic design and branding, and from there we branch out to campaigns, interiors, and art installations. We love collaborating with others who are doing good in the world.
This one-of-a-kind weekend experience is designed to allow you to disconnect, immerse and explore. “Taliesin works like a charm on everybody that comes within its atmosphere,” writes Wright to his friend and client Darwin Martin in 1929. To experience Taliesin to its fullest, you will access a variety of historic spaces and the pristine rural landscape of Driftless Wisconsin.
Complementary housing is included in the workshop experience. Please note that we are not aiming at being a hotel or resort but focusing on carrying out the timeless elements of the Taliesin Legacy – connecting people, architecture, and the land. Each of you will be housed in a single room across the Taliesin estate in rustic Taliesin Fellowship dwellings, with shared bathrooms, access to a kitchenette, and living space.
Each workshop includes a welcome reception in the main residence and a tour of the buildings. Classroom instruction will be held in the world-renowned Hillside Drafting Studio and other designated spaces across the Taliesin estate. Breakfast and lunch will be served at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, while dinner is a wonderful opportunity to explore the local artisanal community individually or as a group.
The workshop check-in will begin Friday afternoon at 2 pm. Please arrive at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center at 5607 County Rd C, Spring Green, WI 53588, and walk into the building. Staff will welcome you upon arrival and usher you to your rooms.
Adult (Ages 18+): $1,200 per person
Includes breakfast and lunches, workshop instruction, materials, guided tour, guest room on the estate, and welcome reception in the main house
