Learn Photography with Photographer Andrew Pielage

New to photography? Stuck in “Auto” mode? Maybe you just can’t seem to get your pictures to look right? Come join professional photographer Andrew Pielage for his Introduction to Photography Workshop. Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece Taliesin and the surrounding estate will be the backdrop for the weekend photographic journey. During the session, you will learn the tools you need to take control of your camera, including aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Learning the rules of composition and consideration of light and shadow will help participants continue to grow in their creativity and skill at photography.

Participants provide their own fully manual camera/lenses, tripod, and flashlight or headlamp. Be prepared for the rural and rustic nature of the Taliesin estate, and bring especially good walking shoes.

Ages 18+ • August 11-13, 2023 •Friday 2pm – Sunday 4pm

About the Instructor

Andrew Pielage is an internationally published architecture and travel photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. Born to an adventurous mother and a geologist father, he spent his childhood exploring the dusty backroads of the American Southwest. This constant desert travel rooted his artistic soul in landscape photography. In his hometown, Pielage discovered the beautiful relationship between landscape and design in the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright inspired his passion for this relationship and his mission to photograph all of Wright’s remaining designs. With over 20 years of experience, including international advertising campaigns and publications, television features, exhibitions, and workshops, Pielage continues to do what he loves: capture the soul of his subjects and inspire imagination through photography and education.

About Your Stay

This one-of-a-kind weekend experience is designed to allow you to disconnect, immerse and explore. “Taliesin works like a charm on everybody that comes within its atmosphere,” Wright penned to his friend and client Darwin Martin in 1929. To experience Taliesin to its fullest, you will access a variety of historic spaces and the pristine rural landscape of Driftless Wisconsin.

Complementary housing is included in the workshop experience. Please note that we are not aiming at being a hotel or resort but focusing on carrying out the timeless elements of the Taliesin Legacy – connecting people, architecture, and the land. Each of you will be housed in a single room across the Taliesin estate in rustic Taliesin Fellowship dwellings, with shared bathrooms, access to a kitchenette, and living space.

Each workshop includes a welcome reception in the main residence and a tour of the buildings. Classroom instruction will be held in the world-renowned Hillside Drafting Studio and other designated spaces across the Taliesin estate. Breakfast and lunch will be served at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, while dinner is a wonderful opportunity to explore the local artisanal community individually or as a group.

The workshop check-in will begin Friday afternoon at 2 pm. Please arrive at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center at 5607 County Rd C, Spring Green, WI 53588, and walk into the building. Staff will welcome you upon arrival and usher you to your rooms.
