A Day at Taliesin 2024 Recap

October 29th, 2024

On Sunday, October 13th, the picturesque estate came alive with color and celebration during A Day at Taliesin. Set against the autumn landscape of the Driftless Region, the event highlighted the rich architectural legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright while honoring Indigenous Peoples Day.

Families roamed the estate, participating in a lively scavenger hunt, while marveling at Taliesin’s architectural wonders. The day boasted a diverse range of activities, from self-guided tours to engaging experiences tailored for young ones.

The festivities began at Riverview Terrace, Wright’s intended “gateway” to Taliesin. From there, guests soon made their way to the Hillside Studio Complex, exploring the building and surrounding landscape that has long served as Wright’s muse.

Driftless Landscape Tours offered insights into the natural wonders that inspired Frank Lloyd Wright, guiding participants on a 1-mile journey across the estate’s scenic terrain.

A highlight of the day was the interactive Nixtamalization and Corn Braiding demonstration led by Oneida grower Dan Cornelius and Chef Yusuf Bin-Rella who introduced participants to the traditional maize preparation techniques used by Indigenous communities for thousands of years.

The day unfolded with even more delights: delicious food prepared by REAP and Chef’s Hideout, artists from Little Eagle Arts Foundation and a tightrope walk by Wild Rumpus Circus.

Partner organization Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway (FLOW) was on-site to share their work in preserving the local landscape.

The afternoon was capped by a moving performance in the historic Hillside Theater by the Little Priest Singers, a Ho-Chunk family drum group from Wisconsin Dells. Their music, dance, and storytelling honored the region’s original inhabitants and provided a memorable cultural experience.
