who benefits and why—
how can i help
Who benefits from preservation?
You do.
Historic places tell a community where it came from. By preserving the past we achieve a sense of continuity, a sense of where we’ve been. And this makes every one of us richer because we’re able to see ourselves as part of an on-going tradition, as part of a human family whose roots we can experience first hand.
Without a good sense of our past as an American community, where would we be? What if those who went before us chose not to preserve the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution? What difference would it make? What if, after the White House was burned in the War of 1812 our forebearers had chosen not to rebuild it? Would the President’s official residence be an upscale condo somewhere in Washington D.C.? What if the cracked Liberty Bell had been melted down as scrap metal? What if the prime real estate upon which Mt. Vernon sits had been sold to developers? Would it make a difference in your life?
These are symbols, to be sure, but symbols have the power to unite. As diverse as we are as a people, these symbols help pull us together as a nation.
Taliesin, too, is a symbol. A symbol of what one person with vision and tenacity can achieve. It is a symbol from which each of us can draw inspiration and strength.
How can I help?
