ECO-FRIENDLY PRACTICES AT TALIESIN PRESERVATION, INC. AND TALIESIN EARN TRAVEL GREEN WISCONSIN CERTIFICATION

SPRING GREEN, WIS. MAY 22, 2008 Travel Green Wisconsin (www.travelgreenwisconsin.com) a voluntary certification program that recognizes tourism businesses for reducing their environmental footprint through eco-friendly practices, has just announced that Taliesin Preservation, Inc. and the Taliesin estate have earned certification.

The landscape and buildings of Taliesin serve as a living laboratory for sustainable design and include native prairies, organic farming, sustainable forestry and specimen gardens. The habitat preservation projects include the restoration of five prairie remnants and half of the six-hundred acre estate is a natural area that is managed for ecological integrity. Taliesin Preservation, Inc., which is located at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center and houses the Riverview Terrace Café, collects all cooking fuel waste and processes for vehicle fuel. The café also uses organic and local food products. Both Taliesin and Taliesin Preservation, Inc. hold strong to a mission to communicate and educate the preservation of organic architecture and continue in strengthening community outreach programs that share the beauty of the arts and nature.

In releasing the news, Tourism Secretary Kelli A.Trumble made the point that serving the needs of eco-aware travelers is not only the right thing to do, it’s good for business.  “Sustainability and profitability need not be mutually exclusive,” Trumble said. “All signs point to a burgeoning consumer demand for green travel in the nation, and the Wisconsin tourism industry is poised to serve this niche market, all the while continuing to grow tourism revenue for the state.”  She went on to say that, “With our state’s history of land stewardship, it’s most fitting that Wisconsin lead the nation in this.”

To achieve certification, applicants must earn a minimum of 30 points from a checklist of basic requirements covering a wide range of “green” practices, including: waste reduction, reuse and recycling; energy efficiency, water conservation and wastewater management; air quality; wildlife and landscape; transportation; purchasing; and local community benefits.  The Wisconsin Environmental Initiative, an independent third party, then certifies Travel Green Wisconsin applicants.

Since it was launched statewide in 2007, Travel Green Wisconsin, the first organization of its kind in the country, has garnered its share of national media coverage, with stories appearing in USA Today, the Chicago Tribune and New York Times, and on CNN.   The program has certified more than 130 tourism businesses to date, including hotels, resorts, B&Bs, restaurants, retail stores, tour operators, nature centers, state parks, convention centers, golf courses, and a range of indoor and outdoor attractions.

Major Donation
Banker hands Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation largest donation ever.

From the Arizona Republic:
T. Denny Sanford, a South Dakota banker who winters in Scottsdale, gave the group $425,000 to preserve Taliesin, Wright's historic 1911 estate in Wisconsin.

From the Associated Press (article available on-line in the AP archives):

T. Denny Sanford's gift provides the matching funds needed to free up another $425,000 of a U.S. Save America's Treasures grant for repairs on Taliesin, Wright's home in Spring Green, said Carol Johnson, executive director of Taliesin Preservation, Inc.

Sanford is chairman of First Premier Bank, Premier Bankcard and First Premier Capital of Sioux Falls, S.D. He lives part-time in Scottsdale, Ariz., home of Taliesin West and the foundation's headquarters.

"Mr. Sanford ... truly fell in love with Taliesin in Spring Green," Johnson said.

The Spring Green Taliesin campus, built between 1911 and Wright's death in 1959, needs about $86 million worth of work, including a new roof, foundation repairs and drainage improvements.

The $850,000 from Sanford's gift and the Save America's Treasures matching grant will go to immediate roof repairs and to draft a master repair plan, Johnson said.
