Architecture Camp for Kids! June 2010
POPULAR SUMMER ARCHITECTURE CAMP OFFERED IN JUNE AT FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S TALIESIN, SPRING GREEN, WISCONSIN
For the first time, the highly regarded Summer Architecture Camp developed by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Scottsdale, AZ., will be offered at Wright’s Wisconsin home, Taliesin, in Spring Green, WI. The camp, offered for the past 15 years at Taliesin West, is designed for students in grades 5-12 and is part of the Foundation’s Education Outreach Program (EOP) that has consistently received recognition for outstanding success in providing high-quality arts-in-education for students and teachers..
“Architecture Camp encourages creative thinking, helps prevent summer learning loss in key curriculum areas and provides students an opportunity to channel their passion, diversity and talent and HAVE FUN,” said Ms. Shawn Rorke-Davis EOP director for the Foundation.
Rorke-Davis said that Wright’s philosophy of architecture lends itself to a comprehensive teaching approach, integrating students’ knowledge in science, art, language, and mathematics and critical thinking.
Students utilize talents in new ways. The camp’s focus challenges those who learn spatially and visually, as well as children who process information verbally and orally, according to Rorke-Davis who founded the camp program at Taliesin West.
“Camp provides an atmosphere in which students discover architecture’s importance in human activity and the critical relationship between buildings and the environment,” said Rorke-Davis.
Wisconsin students will have the opportunity to participate in two of the most popular programs. The first, “Design Your Dream Space” was created as a way to enlighten students about Wright, architecture, planning, and construction through a personalized, hands-on approach. Students design a two-dimensional floor plan to scale and create a 3-D model of their space. They will construct unusual furniture, works of art, landscaping and a roof to complete the project. Offered June 14-18 from 9-noon, the cost is $250.
The second project, “ Wright and Nature” introduces campers to abstract art. The task is to discover geometric shapes and patterns in nature. Campers will begin by sketching a realistic image of one object in nature. Intermediate drawings use stylization and abstraction to further refine the image. Tessellation, rotation, mirror imaging and other methods of inventive repetitive pattern are used in the full size art project. The original will evolve into full color geometric art glass design on archival Mylar. Offered June 14-18 from 1-4pm cost is $150.
Campers will meet at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, 5607 County Highway C Spring Green, WI 53588 For additional information visit here. Email: srdavis@franklloydwright.org Phone: (480)627.5355
